The Summer Program

During the spring semester, Upward Bound students will be planning for the upcoming summer program. For six weeks during the summer, students have the opportunity to live in a Penn State residence hall while participating in an academic experience that will be similar to college. The summer program will provide students with a chance to broaden and enhance their English, Math, Science, and computer knowledge; strengthen their study habits; explore different careers; and participate in educational activities, tours of area colleges and universities, and field trips, all of which are paid for by the program.
Upward Bound students who are currently in eleventh grade are required to participate in the next summer program. If a student required to attend the summer program does not submit the necessary paperwork by the deadline and makes no effort to contact the program, his/her membership in Upward Bound may be terminated and vacancy filled by another interested student. The Upward Bound director may excuse students from attending the summer program if they are participating in another academic experience such as a Governor's School. Students are responsible for ensuring that they contact the program in a timely manner to alert the staff to their summer plans.
The Summer Program Agenda
The summer program is a very busy time for students. Students have a daily schedule and are almost constantly busy attending classes and meals and taking part in activities sponsored by the Upward Bound program. After every dinner, participants are given free time to do whatever they choose. Not all learning takes place on campus though. Upward Bound offers many off campus trips to help students gain a new cultural perspective and have fun. Some of the past summer activities included:
* A senior trip to a major city * Arts Fest Weekend * Plays and musicals * Trips to amusement parks * Athletic activities * Trips to the movies * Shopping * Academic seminars
