What is Upward Bound?
The Upward Bound program at Penn State University works with eligible students in grades 9 through 12 from Clearfield, Indian Valley, Mount Union, Steelton-Highspire, and West Branch High Schools and helps them strengthen their academic skills and learn more about educational opportunities beyond high school. There is no cost to students or their families. This program is entirely funded by an annual grant ($448,715 during the 2006-2007 academic year) from the United States Department of Education.
Upward Bound is a lot of fun! It provides opportunities for students to learn many new things, meet new people, visit many places, and gain an awareness of postsecondary education options. However, it is important to note that the program requires a serious commitment and is a lot of work. Upward Bound students are expected to attend meetings, listen to speakers, participate in many activities, and meet deadlines, all of which are experiences that will successfully prepare them for what they will encounter in college. Students who are no longer willing to participate in required events will be dismissed from the program. Upward Bounders are also expected to maintain good grades and school attendance so that they can be competitive when it comes time for them to apply for college admission.
