The West Branch National Honor Society is lead this year by Mrs. Kim Shaffer who is also our school's librarian. Along with Mrs. Shaffer, there is a Faculty Council that helps during the selection process of new members for the Honor Society. The Faculty Council consists of the following administration:
Mrs. Colleen Viehdorfer
Ms. Crystal Gay
Mr. Dan Socash
How
do you get selected to be in the National Honor Society? First, you have
to be at least a sophomore in order to be considered for admission for the next
school year. Then, there is a selection process that each student who may
be eligible for the Honor Society, has to go through. The Faculty
Council focuses on four main areas in the student's life, which are Scholarship
, Leadership, Character, and Service.
(see NHS webpage - http://www.nhs.us/membership)
In order to be academically eligible, a student must have a first semester average of 90% or higher.
Leadership is based on the student’s outstanding participation in two or more school activities, or election to an office. Participation is assessed via a survey of coaches and club advisors.
Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty. Character is assessed via a survey of the high school faculty.
To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in two or more service projects in the community during the present school year. To help in the evaluation process, the Faculty Council requests each interested candidate to submit two letters of verification from certified representatives of non-school organizations, churches, or places of business where volunteer work is required.
Then,
the Faculty Council reviews the students who return their letters of
recommendation to the Council one last time. If the Faculty Council
determines that a student has met all the requirements, then the student
receives a letter inviting him/her to join the Orenda Chapter of the National
Honor Society.

This year the NHS will sponsor a bloodmobile. Click here to learn more about this.
Also this year we will be doing Pennies For Patients. The money raised for this goes towards the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Western Pennsylvania.
