Recommendations for Helping Your Child
Hello to my students' families.
Perhaps these suggestions will be helpful to you as you encourage and
support your child to become a better reader.
- Read to your child every day. It is
important that your child hears what good reading sounds like. Talk to
your child about the stories that you read.
- Read part or all of a story "together."
This means that you and your child should read the words of the story at
the same time. This will help your child become a smooth reader.
- Try doing some "Paired Reading." Have
your child select something that he/she would like to read. Start
reading together. Your child should tap you on the shoulder or give you
some kind of signal when he/she wants to read alone. If your child has
trouble with a word, tell him/her the word and continue reading together
until your child signals you again. It is alright if you end up doing
most of the reading. Your child will see that you think reading is
important.
- Encourage your child to read. Have books
and other reading materials easily available and within reach. Keep your
reading time enjoyable!
