READING COMPETITION

GUIDELINES AND DIRECTIONS

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The moderator has control in the room.

Coaches of teams must position themselves outside of direct visual contact of their team members. This way no one can confer with his or her team before an answer is given. Please let the competition have a positive effect to project the real purpose of this program.

QUESTIONS:

There are three different rounds of questions. Every room will be asking the same questions during the same round.

SCORING:

1.   The team selecting the “TEAM A” card will begin the round and be questioned first.

Top questions on the sheet will always go to Team A. Read the questions twice. The answering team has up to 30 seconds to answer the question. If they answer it incorrectly, the opposing team is given a chance to answer the question. The question will NOT be repeated for the opposing team. They must be prepared to answer the question immediately in order to get the point.

The moderator can give the correct answer if both teams are unable to answer.

2.   Moderator acknowledges the correct answer: “Team A answered question 1 correctly”, or “Neither team answered question one correctly”.

The scorekeeper will mark the sheet in the following manner:

·                    If Team A answers the question correctly, their column will be marked with a “C”.  If Team A answers the question incorrectly, the column is marked with an X”.

·                    If the opposing team answers the question correctly, mark their column with a “C”. If the question goes unanswered, mark it with an “X”.

NOTE:  Only the moderator can throw out a question or answer. In the event of a problem, they will use one of the EXTRA questions in the packets. When a question asks for a name, teams should not be penalized if they cannot recall the entire name. The moderator makes the decision to accept or reject an answer.

3.   The second question should be asked of Team B, (even numbered questions), and use the same procedure as outlined above.

4.   An illustration of the scoring procedure is as follows:

TEAM A                                              TEAM B

____X____                 1.                     ____C____     Place a “C” for each correct answer

_________                  2.                     ____C____     and an “X” for each incorrect

answer.

____C____                 3.                     _________      Make sure each team is asked 20

_________                  4.                     ____C____     questions.

____C____                 5.                     _________

____X____                 6.                     ____X___       Note: Both teams got #6 wrong.

____2____                  TOTAL            ____3____

COMPETITION:

1.         The questions alternate between teams, Team A receives the top question and Team B receives the bottom questions on the sheet.

Students are not permitted to confer with opposing teams once the contest has begun.

3.         The questioning continues from #1 to #40 and then the score is validated after the last question has been answered. In order to validate the score, simply count the number of C’s in each column and then print the total on the line provided in the box at the top of the sheet.

NOTE: The combined scores will NEVER total more than 40.

4.         The team with the highest number of points of C’s is the winner of the round. The cumulative totals will determine the winners.

5.         As soon as the scores are tabulated and the winner announced, the team representative holding the Official Team Score Tabulation Sheet should come forward and have the score recorded on their sheet. This should be done with the pen that was provided in your moderator packet. The scorekeeper should sign the sheet to confirm the score and then return the sheet to the team representative. Put your completed score sheet back in the packet and return the teams’ sheet to the representative/captain.

6.         The moderator will then send the correct round card with the room number written on it to the officials indicating that the round is completed in that room. The Team’s Official Score Sheet serves as the card for round three. Be sure to send it at the end of the last round.

Note: The next round cannot begin until all cards for the previous round are returned.  Do not excuse teams for the next round until told to do so.  Please have someone stand in doorway (hall) when finished to receive word to move on to the next round.

7.         Keep the teams in the room until you are told to move to the next round. At the end of round three, all moderators return their packets; team representatives give the moderators their tabulation sheets and go for lunch.

No student is to leave the room unless there is an emergency.

Please remember that our moderators and scorekeepers are volunteers who have graciously donated their time so we can hold this competition. The majority have not read the books and it would be unrealistic to expect them to do so. They can only accept what is written on their question and answer form. Like any competition there will be times when you don’t agree with their decision. You are welcome to write down your objections on the comment form and return it to the officials, but the decision of the moderator is final.

TEAMS:

Teams will be comprised of 8 to 12 students, plus two alternates if needed.

Alternates may be used in succeeding round on the same day.

No substitutes will be permitted during a round.

A maximum of 12 students may participate in any given round.

The team captain is to carry the official score sheet to each of the rounds. At the end of the rounds, the captain has the scorekeeper write the score on the appropriate line and sign it. At the end of the third round, turn the sheet into the moderator.

Inside each team’s packet is a team sign. Placed it on the desk or floor to identify the team during rounds. Face it so that the moderator and scorekeeper can see it.

AWARDS:

Certificates and ribbons will be given to all competitors and medallions to each team. Ribbons will be awarded to members who achieve the top five highest scores. Each winning team also receives a ribbon to display in their school trophy case. The team members will be invited to the awards table to receive all awards.  Highest school will also receive a traveling trophy and one for the school.

In the event of a tie, the team scoring the most points in Round 1 will be awarded the higher of the two awards.
